Position Description
Networks Telecoms is responsible for the design, delivery, and operation of ESB Networks National Telecommunications Infrastructure. This network, consisting of a variety of media and technologies, facilitates the remote control and operation of both the Transmission System and Distribution Systems as well as providing telecommunication services to the wider ESB Group.
The Network Service and Deployment Team – South, located within Networks Telecoms is responsible for the safe installation, support and maintenance of a wide range of telecoms technologies such as TDM, PDH, SDH traffic multiplexers, Microwave radio links, UHF polling radio, Satellite, IP networks, IP/PBX telephony, and Fibre in the southern area.
As a member of the NSD South Team, the successful candidate will join a team of professional engineers that are; safety, quality & delivery focused, and will play a key role in the future growth of ESB’s national telecommunications network.
Key Responsibilities
Key responsibilities of this role will include but are not limited to;

  • Involvement in the deployment and integration of new infrastructure into ESB’s Telecoms network
  • Responsible for ongoing support and maintenance of a wide variety of telecoms equipment and infrastructure in ESB locations, including remote high sites and HV utility environments.
  • Provide first line support for faults in the field and respond to urgent tasks, while also ensuring tasks are updated and completed in a safe and timely manner.
  • Coordination/management of third-party contractors and equipment vendor partners
  • Support, maintain and fault find 48V DC Power and UPS standby power systems
  • Implement and support SCADA/telemetry systems used to control the Electricity network
  • Install, support, and maintain the fibre, copper, and cat5/6 cable infrastructure systems
  • Partake in a strong safety, quality, and high-performance team culture
  • Project coordination for Telecommunications projects across the ESB Group
  • Engage and communicate with the various Networks Telecoms stakeholders in a profession manner
  • Partake in training and development activities
  • Partake in an On-Call or Availability rota

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • At least 3-5 years relevant experience in a Telecoms related discipline
  • Experienced in physically building Telecoms Infrastructure services from plans and to the quality specifications
  • Demonstrable “hands on” experience in fault-finding activities, i.e., using test equipment for network and power troubleshooting.
  • Good communication and organisational skills
  • Have a safety-first focus approach to all activities and task
  • Computer proficient and excellent standard of written and spoken English
  • Ability to manage own workload and meet all SLAs as required
  • Flexible approach to the role, with the ability to adapt, learn on the job and react to business needs.
  • Full clean driving licence


  • Some experience working on electrical systems
  • Experience with preparation of safety documentation
  • Project Management experience
  • Familiarity with utility and hill/high site environments
  • On-Call or Availability experience
  • Working in a Field based role
  • IP Skillsets


  • Either a 3rd Level qualification in an electrical/telecommunication/IT discipline or equivalent work experience from a trade background.
  • As travel will be a feature of this role, a full clean driving license is required.

  • Fibre, ethernet installation certifications.

This role will be based in ESB Networks, Wilton. The role will combine a mix of field and office-based work. The successful candidate may report between Wilton and other base locations within the Southern region, the frequency of which will be determined by the manager.
